StarNet, a national commercial flooring cooperative, awarded Intertech first place in the Health Care category. The $200 million Dell Children's Medical Center opened in summer 2007 and is on track to become the first LEED Platinum health care facility in the country and one of only a handful worldwide.
Intertech's work was selected from more than 100 flooring projects nationwide. Sharing the awards with Intertech are architect/designers Joseph F. Kuspan, Stephen T. Zilles and Kenneth C. Redman, with Karlsberger.
“Every aspect of this project was approached with sustainable building concepts in mind, literally from the ground up,” said Intertech Flooring CEO Bill Imhoff. “Intertech already had extensive green building project experience, and this project gave us an opportunity to leverage and further expand that knowledge.”

In addition, Intertech Flooring sponsored entries by two Univeristy of Texas at San Antonio interior design students who received first place and honorable mention in the Student Design category. Student Joaquin Abrego took top honors for his project, Balance Advertising. Abrego received honorable mention in last year’s StarNet competition. Honorable mention this year went to UTSA student Nicole Nelson for her ceramic artist loft project. UTSA Interior Design Program Coordinator Susan Lanford has incorporated the competition into the school’s curriculum.
The StarNet competition recognizes outstanding creativity in flooring design and the innovative use of floor covering in commercial interiors. Projects are judged on their creative use of flooring, flooring design concept, special challenges and how well the design met client objectives.
