Earn While You Learn with Intertech’s
Apprenticeship Program.
Get the Training that Pays Off… And a College Degree.
Not long after its founding in 1988, Intertech CEO Bill Imhoff
began exploring ideas for an apprenticeship program that would
offer inexperienced workers an opportunity to learn lucrative
skills, gain college credits -- and get paid while they were
learning.
The result was the creation of Intertech Flooring's Apprenticeship
Program for Certified Flooring Mechanics. This unique program
is the only one of its kind in the floor covering industry nationwide
that can assist young workers in getting a college education
and creating the foundation for a lifelong career.
How the Program Works.
Intertech collaborated with local community colleges to develop
a program that combines classroom instruction - led by journeymen,
project managers and graduates of the apprenticeship program
-- with practical application working alongside experienced journeyman
installers. Apprentices learn everything from the technical aspects
of installing commercial flooring, to the skills needed to move
into project management - such as estimating, reading blueprints,
and tracking and invoicing jobs.
Learn and Earn.
During the three-year program, apprentices complete 133
hours per year in the classroom and 4,000 hours of paid employment
assisting a professional journeyman installer. Intertech apprentices
earn a percentage of a journeyman's wages, and the percentage
increases as the apprentice progresses through the program. Participating
apprentice installers receive health, dental and disability insurance,
and benefit from flexible work scheduling to accommodate school
and other responsibilities. Intertech believes in hiring and
promoting from within, and many of our project managers and other
team leads started from the ground and worked their way up.
Pursue a College Degree.
The curriculum is the foundation for a two-year associate degree
through local community colleges. It is certified by the U.S.
Department of Labor and administered in our Austin office by Austin
Community College and in San
Antonio by St. Phillips College. Upon completion, apprentices
will have earned a certificate from the US Department of Labor
as a certified flooring mechanic -- as well as college credits
toward a degree in applied sciences from local community colleges.
What Apprentices Earn.
- Starting pay well above minimum wage with performance-based
raises every six months
- Accreditation as a journeyman installer
- Two-year associate degree after completing required coursework
- Health insurance and other benefits
- The foundation for a lifelong career in a rapidly changing
growth industry, with plenty of opportunity for advancement.
Who May Apply?
The Intertech Apprenticeship Program is ideal for young workers
who want to learn a trade or go to college, but need ongoing
income while they pursue their studies. Intertech is known for
its exceptional service to customers, and we look for apprentices
who value great service and share our strong work ethic.
Apprentices must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical
condition and drug free, and have a high school or GED diploma.
Intertech Flooring is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
What's the Career Potential?
Commercial flooring mechanics are among the highest paid technical
specialists. A journeyman installer has the potential to earn
in excess of $50,000 per year. Intertech believes in hiring and
promoting from within, and many of our apprentices progress to
become project managers and other team leads.
